What Is Stair Nosing — and Which One Do You Need?

Stair nosing is the profile that covers and protects the leading edge of a stair tread — the part that takes every footstep. It protects the floor covering where it is most exposed and makes the edge of each step easier to see. Küberit KS profiles are metal stair nosings for new stairs and for retrofit work. Two questions decide which one fits: what the treads are covered with, and whether the stair is already finished.

Pre-Fit or Retrofit?

Pre-fit nosings are installed together with the floor covering on a new or newly covered stair. Retrofit nosings are fitted onto stairs that are already finished. Küberit KS-A to KS-E and KS-L are pre-fit; KS-F to KS-K are retrofit. KS-F, KS-G and KS-K take all types of floor covering, which makes them the usual choice when a stairwell mixes materials.

Slip Resistance and Step Visibility

A stair nosing does two safety jobs at once: it adds slip resistance at the tread edge and makes the edge of each step easier to see. Küberit KS-PVC inserts are made for exactly that — PVC inserts for safety stair-nosings, fitted into the profile. Finishes include anodized aluminum in silver, sand, bronze and titanium, polished and brushed options, wood decors, and powder coating in almost any RAL color, so the nosing can either match the tread or contrast with it deliberately to mark the step edge. The standard length is 2.50 meters (approximately 8' 2-1/2").
